A marine diesel engine requires an adequate supply of air to operate effectively. The amount of combustion air needed is approximately 6.1m³ per kW (4.5 m³ per hp) per hour, assuming a maximum air velocity of 3m/sec. Additionally, the engine needs sufficient ventilation air to remove the heat generated during operation, which is roughly equal to the amount of combustion air required.
